Avenger of the Week | Jane Fraser, Incoming Citi CEO
Avenger of the Week Jane Fraser is set to break U.S. banking’s glass ceiling in February when she becomes the first woman CEO of a major bank, Citigroup, the nation’s third largest bank with $1.96 trillion in assets. She is currently President of Citigroup and CEO of Global Consumer Banking in 19 countries. Previously, Fraser was a partner at McKinsey and Company for a decade before joining Citigroup, where she made a steady climb, and she served successively as CEO of four other Citi business units.
Born in Scotland, Fraser, 53, graduated from Cambridge University and has an MBA from Harvard University. She is married to a former banker, has two sons, and speaks candidly about the challenge of balancing career and family. Fraser described her experience working part time while her children were very young:
“Being a mother of young children and having a career is the toughest thing I have ever had to do. You are exhausted, guilty, and you must learn how to do things differently. It was the making of me because I became much more 80-20 — focusing on what was really important — got good at saying no, and also became more human to the clients who also face many of these issues too”.
As the first woman to be named head a major bank and for telling it like it is, we’re proud to honor Jane Fraser as our Avenger of the Week.
