Action Alert | The United States Conference of Mayors Leaves Women Out

Beginning on June 8, members of the United States Conference of Mayors will converge upon Boston for their annual meeting. Over three days, attendees will see 57 men and only 21 women (8 of them are women of color) leading workshops, delivering speeches, and participating on panels.

Now, we know what you’re going to say. “But GenderAvenger, the U.S. Conference of Mayors stated that as of March 2018, only 21.8% of the mayors of U.S. cities with populations over 30,000 were women* so of course there will be fewer women speaking than men.” We thought the same thing, too, but, alas, not every speaker is a mayor. There are speakers from Airbnb, Bank of America, and local community colleges, so there is no reason that only 27% of the speakers are women. With the huge surge of women running for office, it would serve this organization well to better represent them on stage.

With the huge surge in women running for office, it would serve @usmayors well to add more women speakers to their agenda for #uscm2018. #genderavenger https://www.genderavenger.com/blog/action-alert-united-states-conference-of-mayors-leaves-women-out
