Welcome to the third weekly installment of Who Talks? statistics on GenderAvenger! From now through November, we are posting weekly shareable infographics from the Who Talks? campaign that show the representation of women analysts during the 2016 presidential election.
We had a few standout moments in last week’s election coverage:
- As a result of last Tuesday’s primary results, on Wednesday five photos of Hillary Clinton were the backdrop on the set of Morning Joe. Photos turned out to be the most consistent female presence at the table since only 15% of the show’s segments involved women analysts.
- "I like the double estrogen hit on this side of the table here. I mean, it's not, I've never seen this before, have you?" This was Donnie Deutsch’s response to having Mika Brzezinski and Nicole Wallace hosting Morning Joe. GenderAvenger wants more attention paid to women analysts onscreen, but not like this. We’re not the only ones that noticed Deutsch’s inappropriate remarks: this exchange was cut from the segment when it was repeated in the third hour.
- Morning Joe didn’t have a monopoly on disappointments last week. After putting The Rachel Maddow Show in the GenderAvenger Hall of Fame last week, we were disappointed to see that they featured ZERO women analysts the following week. Tweet the new infographic to @maddow and let her know that we’re watching — and looking for long term results.
What is Who Talks?
Who Talks? monitors the highest-rated morning and evening shows on three major television news networks: CNN, FOX, and MSNBC. Any guest who is not the host (or substitute host) and is asked to comment substantively on the 2016 presidential election is counted as an analyst. We count the total number of election analyst of each gender in each show and then compare aggregate numbers and proportional representation. Data is published monthly.
