Let's Speak a Language Twitter Will Hear: Join Us for a Twitter Boycott on Friday, April 9

We normally send out a newsletter on Fridays with one of our original blog posts and a highlight of our Avenger of the Week, but this week we are postponing that newsletter, because we are all joining together to let Twitter know what a public space without women sounds like.

Heidi Moore has organized a boycott of Twitter on Friday, April 9th to bring more serious attention to the problem of online safety and to do something about it, “especially for women, who are particular targets of mass harassment.” If you’re wondering why we’re going silent to fight for women’s voices, which may seem counterintuitive, Moore digs into why a boycott makes sense with regard to Twitter’s business model. When we saw that Cindy Gallop was on board and asking us to join in, we knew this was a good opportunity to stand by our mission to ensure women’s voices in the public dialog.

GenderAvenger will not be using Twitter from 12am to midnight ET tomorrow, and we ask you to join us in our boycott from your respective time zone.

Women can’t attain and maintain their equal places in the public dialog if mass harrassment remains such an entrenched part of Twitter’s culture.

Let’s hit them where it hurts — their user numbers and engagement.
