I Am a GenderAvenger

During the month of October, GenderAvenger challenged a diverse group of women to download the GA Tally app and take it beyond the conference stage. We asked them to use the app throughout their day wherever they went, and to keep track of the gender imbalances they were seeing. They created a varied group of tallies, both positive and negative, that provide a snapshot of the gender balance we see in day to day life.

Diane from Suburbia Unwrapped made an interesting observation about the gender balance among authors in a bookstore’s Current Affairs section:

Because of the app, Hannah from Motivated Gen Y was inspired to call out the lack of women speakers at a conference, and she was disappointed in the excuses she heard.

Wendi Aarons was pleasantly surprised to find more women than men at the Smart Social Summit she attended:

Amanda Magee said yes to seeing things differently when it comes to gender balance.

Carissa from The Green Eyed Lady Blog used the app at a presentation at her daughter’s school:

Travel blogger Meg from Dopes on the Road fired up the app to count the number of women, women of color, and nonbinary folks on the Top 100 LGBT Influencers list:

Ching from In and Out of Vegas credited her mom as being among the first GenderAvengers in her life.

Using the app helped Stacy at Fancy Shanty realize that more women are needed on her town’s Little League Board of Directors:

Anitra from The Mom on the Move offered up three tips for advocating for girls.

We know that gender imbalance reaches far beyond the conference stage or boardroom, and this campaign highlighted just how much work is still left to be done. The good news is that 62 new people downloaded the app in October, which means there are that many more GenderAvengers opening their eyes and amplifying their voices.
