The Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction is one of the most respected literary awards in the world. Founded in 1996 to celebrate and honour the very best writing by women, it is now one of the largest celebrations of female writing, with previous winners including Lionel Shriver, Rose Tremain and Eimear McBride. 

But 22 years on, people are starting to ask whether we really need an award like this anymore. Some argue that we place too much value on literary prizes - and that there are simply too many of them.

So why, in 2017, is it imperative that we continue to celebrate and champion female writers?
