Women earned more than 35% of computer science degrees in the early 1980s, but as salaries in the field surged, men flooded the zone and the share of women pursuing the discipline plummeted. 

Somewhere along the way, a cultural stereotype “that women are bad at math” solidified, said Erin Cech, an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Michigan who has studied gender equity in the sciences.
