Action Alert | BIO 2019 Has 24 Manels

The 2019 BIO International Convention begins on June 3, and we’re disappointed to report that there will be TWENTY-FOUR manels at this year’s conference — just ONE less than last year. Some of them are made up of 3 or more men billed equally as speakers, and some have 3 or more men with one listed as moderator. Others, 9 to be exact, are total and complete camouflage, listing one woman alongside the other speakers, but then placing her as a panel moderator separate from the actual speaker group. When women are relegated to the moderator role, it gives the impression that they are not as knowledgeable or as important to the conversation as the men. It’s inaccurate, it takes the spotlight away from equally deserving women, and it’s wrong.
