Avengers of the Week | All The Women Who Ran For Office This Week

From the Women’s March to election day, women are stepping into the spotlight.  It certainly looks like more women than ever are running for office, as we saw this past Tuesday when women candidates achieved a variety of “firsts” in their districts.

According to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University, several important landmarks were achieved on Election Day:

• New Virginia lawmakers will include the first woman elected as openly transgender, the first Latinas, and the first Asian American woman in the House of Delegates.
• New Jersey’s new lieutenant governor will be a Black woman, the first elected to statewide office in the Garden State. Sheila Oliver will also be the nation’s first Black Democratic woman lieutenant governor.
• Charlotte, NC elected its first Black woman mayor, and Seattle elected its first woman mayor in almost a century, who will also be the city’s first openly lesbian mayor.
• Atlanta’s mayoral race will be decided in a runoff between two women.

In addition, Andrea Jenkins was elected to the Minneapolis City Council, becoming the first openly transgender Black woman elected to the city council of a major U.S. city, and Joyce Craig will be the first woman to serve as mayor of New Hampshire’s largest city.

Congratulations to all these brave women. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for 2018.
