Avenger of the Week | Sandy Oestreich, Founder and President, Equal Rights Alliance
Sandy Oestreich was one of the very first GenderAvenger supporters. Now that we’re celebrating our fifth year in existence, it seems fitting to declare her our Avenger of the Week.
Interested in gender equality and women’s rights from a very young age, Sandy started breaking social norms in her early twenties when she attended college after getting married. She went on to march in support of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) in the 1970s and has never looked back. At 84 years old and as the Founder and President of the Equal Rights Alliance, Oestreich fought for equal rights, concentrating her efforts on Virginia, the last state needed to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. While the battle for the ERA continues for other reasons, her work in Virginia proved successful, as the state legislature ratified the amendment in January 2020.
🦸♀️ @GenderAvenger #AvengerOfTheWeek and equal rights activist @sandyoestreich has been working toward the same goal for decades — to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. #GenderAvenger https://www.genderavenger.com/blog/avenger-of-the-week-sandy-oestreich
