Avenger of the Week | Noelle Stevenson, Creator, Showrunner, and Executive Producer of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power

Anyone who grew up in the 1980s was likely aware of She-Ra: Princess of Power, which, according to Wikipedia, was “aimed primarily at a young female audience to complement He-Man's popularity with young males.” [insert eyeroll]

Comic writer and illustrator Noelle Stevenson was psyched when she was brought on board to run the show’s reboot in 2018, but she wanted to make some changes so girls watching today would see more characters like them, which was totally different than the 1980s’ version. Stevenson kept the main good vs evil conflict, but she gave She-Ra a few friends and changed the name of the show to She-Ra and the PRINCESSES of Power. Instead of an all-white group with the same body shape, though, now there are women of color, women of various body shapes and sizes, and LGBTQ characters, all of whom are equally important. In addition to increasing the on-screen representation of women, Stevenson did the same behind the scenes, bringing in an all-women writing team.
