Avenger of the Week | Marley Dias, #1000BlackGirlBooks
We are seriously fangirling over Marley Dias.
When 13-year-old Marley Dias’s mother asked her, “If you could change one thing, what would it be?”, her response started a movement. Marley was tired of reading books with main characters who were white boys and dogs. She wanted to find books where black girls like her were front and center, not just sidekicks or best friends. To find those books, Marley started the social media movement #1000BlackGirlBooks with the intention of collecting 1,000 books where black girls were featured and then donating them to libraries across the United States. Marley ended up collecting close to 10,000 books, and she even wrote one herself about literacy and diversity.
We are so pleased to have learned about Marley and proud to feature her as our Avenger of the Week. Don't forget to check out her 1000 Black Girl Books Resource Guide.
