Avenger of the Week | Marjory Stoneman Douglas: Journalist, Author, Environmentalist

Marjory Stoneman Douglas was nominated for Avenger of the Week by advocate, author, and journalist Beverly Wettenstein. Although Stoneman Douglas is best known for her environmental work in the Everglades, she gained notoriety early in her writing career by  making a name for herself at The Miami Herald, which won over reader support for causes like women’s rights, civil rights, urban planning, and addressing poverty. In college, Stoneman Douglas joined the first suffrage club and later served as a charter member of the first ACLU chapter organized in the South. Even into her nineties, she lent her support to the Florida Rural Legal Services, a group fighting for the rights of migrant workers. She lived until the age of 108, and her legacy and spirit lives on in the activism of students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland, Florida.
