Avenger of the Week | Madam C.J. Walker (nee Sarah Breedlove)

GenderAvenger co-founder Gina Glantz has been raving about the Netflix series Self Made to anyone she can. Not only is the show well-acted and well-produced, but the subject, Madam C.J. Walker, one of America's first self-made millionaires who was a woman, is fascinating.

You can find her whole story here, but the much abbreviated version is that when Walker began experiencing hair loss like so many other African-American women at the time, rather than cover her head with a scarf, as was customary, she created and perfected her own hair care method and product line. Walker and the team of women she trained to sell her products promoted them throughout the world, resulting in the successful creation of the Madam C.J. Walker Manufacturing Company, which eventually earned profits equaling the modern-day equivalent of several million dollars.
