Jessica Chastain, actress and jury member of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, spoke her truth during the festival close regarding how women are depicted in the 20 films she watched. Her impression? “Quite disturbing.” Her solution? “Include more female storytellers.”

When we include more female storytellers, we will have more of the women I recognize in my day-to-day life — ones that are proactive, have their own agencies, don’t just react to the men around them,” she said. “They have their own point of view.

This year’s festival did recognize a few female directors, including Sophia Coppola, who won the Best Director award, but she is only the second woman in the 70-year history of the festival to win this award.
