Action Alert | Welcome Aboard Eden Getahun, Harvard IOP Intern
We welcome our new summer intern, Eden Getahun, to the GenderAvenger community! Eden’s work will support our intersectional approach to gender equality. She will lend her talents, skills, and expertise to our content and other initiatives. As a tiny but mighty squad, we are delighted to have her with us.
For nearly 30 years, the Director’s Internship has been a signature program of the Harvard Institute of Politics. GenderAvenger has been fortunate to partner with Harvard IOP for five years to provide growth opportunities for young advocates exploring gender equality and elevating women’s voices in public dialogue.

Hey everyone! My name is Eden Getahun, and I am so excited to participate in the GenderAvenger internship this summer. I completed my first year at Harvard College and plan to major in Sociology with a secondary focus in Global Health and Health Policy. I am interested in the intersections of race and health and am considering getting a Public Health degree after finishing my undergraduate degree. My passions include poetry, student and racial advocacy work, mental health awareness, and reproductive justice. I work as a Woman of Color Ambassador for the Women’s Center, volunteer for the Cambridge Afterschool Tutoring Program, write for the Crimson magazine, and plan to join Harvard Undergraduate Black Health Advocates in the coming year.
This internship caught my attention because of my passion for reproductive justice and racial advocacy. I believe that intersectionality is essential in all activism and advocacy efforts that people pursue. This organization utilizes this principle very well, focusing on the representation of women and women of color, and nonbinary folk. Two years ago, I participated in the Summer of H.E.R. Fellowship - a reproductive rights organizing campaign. That experience taught me the basics of grassroots organizing, utilizing social media for social change, and the relational organizing model. The experience culminated in an opportunity where my cohort planned a virtual summit with over 400 attendees, 10 of whom were Congress members.
I am grateful for the opportunity to support GenderAvenger this summer. The work done by GenderAvengers like you is especially relevant now after the Roe v. Wade draft leak. Ensuring that women are positioned as experts and have opportunities to lead is critically important. Work like this is very engaging to me, and the Director’s Internship with GenderAvenger is a chance to continue expanding those skills I learned at the Summer of H.E.R. Fellowship. Now is the time to come together and organize and fight to protect reproductive rights, which fits into this larger conversation about how we make gender equality a reality.
