Action Alert | New Yorker Illustrations: October Update

The New Yorker continues to do some things well and struggle with others. The Poetry and Fiction sections seem to have it figured out: women have one more poem this year than last, and the Fiction section features 23 women and 19 men in 2017 vs. 19 women and 24 men in 2016.

There are more cartoons by women overall in 2017 (150 of 584 vs. 101 of 610 in 2016), but since women represent only 26% of published cartoons overall, there’s still a long way to go. And the covers? The numbers are just as bad as last year — only 15% of them are by women. Thanks to Jessica Esch (@jesch30) for the update.

The @NewYorker is s.l.o.w.l.y squeaking along to improve gender representation throughout their publication. But there is still a way to go. h/t @jesch30 for her diligence. #genderavenger https://twitter.com/jesch30/status/930054700002676738
