Action Alert | Checking the Weather at CES 2018 with the GA Tally App

At the core of GenderAvenger’s mission is the power of one simple gesture: the count. We believe that keeping track of how women are represented (or not) in the public sphere creates awareness and becomes a powerful tool for change. As you probably know by now, we are not happy with the ratio of men to women keynote speakers at CES 2018 (does ZERO count as part of a ratio?), so we thought we’d use the GA Tally to see how some other CES sessions measure up.

The Future Is Bright

Any panel or speaker lineup with 40% or more women represented is considered top notch in our book, so if you’re headed to CES we encourage you to check out the “Incorporating Drones and Self-Driving Vehicles into Communities” session, which has a panel of 3 women and 1 man.

Any panel or speaker lineup with 40% or more women makes for a bright future. Kudos to the organizers of the "Incorporating Drones and Self-Driving Vehicles into Communities" session at #CES2018. #genderavenger #gatally http://app.genderavenger.com/share/35731756e240b8389e007140da1d3471

Cloudy With a Chance of Patriarchy

Any panel falling within 30-39% of women speakers is not great, but it’s not a total wash either. Like a forecast of partly cloudy, a panel in this range has the opportunity to improve. Adding one more woman or replacing one of the men would have a positive impact on “The State of the Wearable” panel.

So close, but not quite there. Adding one more woman, or replacing one of the men, would move this #CES2018 "The State of the Wearable" panel from cloudy to bright. #genderavenger #gatally http://app.genderavenger.com/share/f2460ab8230dc2323d4fa529d8d9ebb0

A Thunderstorm of Gender Inequality

If you find your panel in this category, it’s time to examine your process for choosing speakers. A panel with less than 30% women won’t allow attendees to get a well-rounded understanding of the topic at hand. We’re quite certain that there are some really smart, really qualified women who know a lot about the brain, but you’d never know it from “The Brain—The Next Frontier” panel.

Are you attending CES or another upcoming conference?

You can create your own images of gender (im)balance in under 90 seconds with the GA Tally app, which lets you record and share your daily observations. Whether it’s on TV, as an audience member at a conference, or on a magazine cover, the GA Tally makes it easy to hold decision-makers accountable. We hope you’ll download it, use it, and join other Avengers in calling out underrepresentation of women all over the world.
